The article analyzes the economic and social history of building sector by reviewing some recent essays on pre-industrial European towns. The paper shows the impact of construction and real estate markets on a wide range of economic and demographic issues such as production, consumption, labour markets, trades, migrations, transports, logistics and infrastructures. Authors suggest that building sector should have a more relevant place in historical analysis, since in European cities it played an important «pre-keynesian» role facing to economic and demographic cycles.
